Alicia stood atop the parapet, her sapphire shield glowing with an ethereal light that pierced the gloom. Beneath her, the twisted streets of Veil ran red with demonic ichor. Astral horrors swarmed the cobblestones, their eldritch forms shifting between planes of existence as they sought to devour mortal souls.
She drew her blade, an ancient rune-forged sword named Celestial Fury, and leapt from the battlements. The night air ripped at her hair and cloak as she plummeted toward the writhing horde. Alicia landed amidst the fiends in a spray of brimstone and blood.
"Save us, holy warrior!" A frightened woman screamed from a nearby window.
"I'll try, I'll try," Alicia muttered. She raised her shield and the demons recoiled, covering their bulbous eyes from the holy light. Celestial Fury sang as it sliced through chitin and bone, cleaving abominations in twain. Gouts of foul ichor splattered Alicia's armor but the blessed alloy did not stain.
Dozens fell before her storm of steel and light, but for every demon she slew, two more emerged from the mists between worlds. Their numbers seemed without end.
"Fight on, my child," a voice rang in her mind. Alicia recognized the honey-sweet tones of Elyria, her patron goddess. "You cannot win this battle, but by your valiant defense, the faithful within Veil shall escape to fight again another day."
Tears of frustration pricked at Alicia's eyes. To fight and die for nothing...was this her fate? Her destiny?
She shook off despair and plunged back into the fray. Her sword and shield were blurs of holy light. Demons shrieked as they were hacked apart, black blood splashing the streets. The fiends clawed and bit, seeking to drag her down beneath their numbers.
Alicia staggered back, gore-drenched and tiring, as the horde surged around her. Her shield shone like a desperate star against the encroaching darkness. Just as all seemed lost, a blinding radiance illuminated the night. Aloft, a winged figure plummeted from the heavens to slam into the center of the demon horde.
The newcomers sword flashed as he clove fiends left and right. Alicia recognized the golden wings upon his back. An Archon! One of the fallen angelic guardians, exiled to Middle Earth long ago.
"I am Zephyr," the Archon called out. "The Matriarch has sent me to your aid, holy warrior."
"Took you long enough," Alicia growled, not slowing her onslaught. "I've been fighting in the dark for hours."
Zephyr's golden eyes flashed in the gloom. "Apologies, sister. Gathering the Heavenhost took time. But we are here now. Let us rain glorious ruin upon these foul creatures!"
The two angels of war scythed through the demon horde, holy light and celestial song rising above the cacophony of battle. Seelie demons scattered before them, loathsome forms discorporating into ichorous mists.
In moments it was done. Maimed and wheezing, Alicia lowered her blade. The night was quiet save for the groans of dying fiends.
"Thank you," she said to Zephyr. "I thought that was the end."
"You are Elyria's champion," Zephyr replied. "The Goddess would not let you fall here. Your trials have only begun."
Alicia frowned, not understanding. Then it came to her. The prophecy. The day she was born, Elyria appeared before her parents in a vision.
"This child shall be my sword against the darkness," the Goddess had said. "In her hands I shall unleash my holy light and scour the Seelie from the face of Middle Earth."
The woman looked up at the Archon, her eyes hardening. "You speak true. I am the Goddess' instrument. And I will not rest until the Seelie are no more."
Zephyr bowed his head. "You have a long road ahead, holy warrior. But the Heavenhost shall be your shield and sword every step of the way. This I swear to you."
