Character Profile: Empress Lycoris
Role: Sovereign of the Sunken Spire / Arch-Warlock of the Eternal Tide
Personality & Character:
Empress Lycoris is a ruler of unyielding pride and predatory composure. She does not hide in shadows; she commands them openly. Gifted with forbidden long life through an ancient pact with the sea, she treats her kingdom not just as a throne, but as an altar. She is fiercely calculative, charismatic, and entirely detached from the mortal plights of her citizens. Her confident posture and direct gaze communicate a silent truth: everything the light touches, and everything the tide buries, belongs exclusively to her.
Dark Fantasy Story: "The Price of Living Stone"
The river flowing through the Sunken Hegemony tasted of ancient gold and stale blood.
Kaelen pressed himself against the damp stone of the lower aqueduct, his eyes locked on the grand plaza above. For three centuries, his people had lived under the shadow of the Colossus—the massive stone face carved into the very bones of the palace. Legend said the stone was not carved; it was a god, petrified alive to anchor the floating spires of Empress Lycoris.
The water suddenly began to hum, vibrating against Kaelen's boots. The tide was rising, but it wasn't the sea. It was the magic of the core.
Up on the moss-covered rocks, Empress Lycoris stepped into the open air. Her royal purple robe swept across the stones like a wave of dark water, the purple floral embroidery catching the faint, breaking sunlight. Her high-gloss red corset gleamed like fresh blood, reflecting the sparks dancing from the ritual pyre nearby. She rested her hands on her hips, her dark, untamed hair catching the ocean gale as she looked out over the lower city.
"You hide in the shallows, thief," her voice echoed, not loudly, yet it carried over the roar of the waterfalls, perfectly clear.
Kaelen froze. He had the stolen relic—the heart-stone that fed the palace engines—hidden in his satchel. Without it, the spires would fall.
Lycoris slowly turned her head toward his hiding spot. Her expression was not angry; it was amused. She tilted her chin up, gesturing toward the massive stone face behind her. The eyes of the colossus suddenly flashed with a deep, sickly golden glow, and the stone lips parted slightly, exhaling a cloud of hot, sulfurous steam.
"The stone demands a soul to keep the spires aloft, little moth," Lycoris murmured, stepping closer to the edge of the river bank. Her metallic boots clicked sharply against the wet stone. "If you take its heart, I will simply replace it with yours. The engine does not care whose blood keeps it running."
As the water around Kaelen’s knees began to boil with golden light, he realized the terrifying truth. The Empress hadn't lost her relic. She had simply let him take it, using it as a lure to catch the next sacrifice her living city required to survive another hundred years.
